Two-piece Suit vs Three-piece Suit

Choosing the correct suit is the perfect way to reflect your personality and style, especially now that there are so many designs, fabrics, patterns and cuts available. The downside to having so much variety of course, is that when we have so many options presented to us, we don't quite know where to begin!  There are 3 main types of suit, the two-piece suit, the three-piece suit, or the tuxedo – each has its own unique features that influence which one you choose. This blog compares two and three-piece suits to aid your decision when it comes to purchasing a new one.

The Two-piece Suit:

This suit is the most common type of suit, consisting of trousers and a matching jacket. It is timeless, never goes out of fashion and is the most versatile of the two suits. If in doubt, a two-piece suit will never let you down – from a business meeting, interview, formal event or wedding, a two -piece suit that is tailored well, will make you look elegant and smart. It is simple but highly effective if worn well.  The two-piece suit offers the option to wear either the jacket or trousers individually. For example, the jacket could be worn with a pair of jeans or chinos if requiring the smart casual look for a date night or party. Alternatively, swap out the formal shirt for a t-shirt on the warm summer days or a rollneck during the chilly winter months. The trousers could be worn with a casual jacket and trainers for a more fashionable approach. Choosing the right colour for your two-piece suit can also influence the formal or informal look; for the formal approach, a dark colour is a good option, but if desiring a more casual look, lighter colours work well.

A Few Things To Consider When Purchasing Your Two-piece Suit:

  • The fit – it should be tailored to your shape.
  • The fabric – always choose a good quality fabric ensuring the longevity of the suit.
  • The cut – slim-fit is the most popular choice with straight leg trousers.
  • Jacket type – choose whether a single- or double-breasted suit is the most appropriate option.
  • The style - this should be timeless.

The Three-piece Suit:

This suit consists of a matching jacket, waistcoat (also known as a vest) and trousers. It is undoubtedly the most sophisticated and elegant option of the two. Wearing a three-piece suit is your moment to impress and reflect your character and style to those around you. It is often referred to as a ‘full suit’ or a ‘business suit’, and is best worn with a coordinating shirt and tie, and smart shoes. The waistcoat can be worn as either single or double breasted, and if you wish to make it a feature, add a subtle pattern or colour and it will stand out from the jacket and trousers. Whatever you choose, all three components of this suit should fit well and complement one another. The three-piece suit is considered to be the ‘go-to’ for formal occasions, especially a wedding or evening event where the dress code is smart. It will never disappoint at any occasion that requires you to be dressed in your best.

When considering purchasing a three-piece suit, the things to consider are:

  • The fit – just like the two-piece it should be tailored well to your shape.
  • The fabric – a good quality fabric is so important ensuring the longevity of the suit, and a classic, elegant look.
  • The cut – slim-fit is the most popular choice with straight leg trousers and a slim fitting waistcoat and jacket.
  • Jacket type – choose whether a single- or double-breasted jacket is the most appropriate option – the most common choice is single breasted, but if you wish to be bold and impactful, a double-breasted jacket is an excellent choice.
  • The style – this should reflect your personality. Keep it timeless and it will serve you for many years to come!
